10 Best FPS Games to Play on PC

FPS Games are undoubtedly one of the most popular genres in gaming. While the genre has evolved, its central purpose of adrenaline-filled action has remained since the early days of Doom and Wolfenstein.

Although no one will be calling the latest Call of Duty a Doom shooter today because that was a thing in the 90s, the key components of the genre have remained surprisingly similar. While the saturated genre sees plenty of cookie-cutter low-impact titles come and go, the following have etched their names into the gaming history books.

So with that said, let’s check out 10 of the best first-person shooters of all time.

Battlefield One

Battlefield One

This game is the EA’s answer to Call of Duty. Well, nearly an answer and good-hearted competition. The Battlefield franchise has largely been a success because of its sturdy first-person shooter mechanics and historical settings.

However, Battlefield One, which was coincidentally not the first entry in the franchise, really upped the series’s status, and it has yet to be surpassed. Many reviews praised the fact that Battlefield One managed to make the complexities of world war one easy to understand, and as a result, it’s enjoyable.

The game showcased how good a game can be that is grounded in the gritty reality of war while leaning on trusted mechanics. However, some critics were more impressed with the fact that the title made world war one compelling, which in the aftermath of this game seems to be an odd concern as it shows just how moving the war was.

Quake 3

Quake 3 is a legendary game that did a lot for online gameplay and furthered the genre while laying down the framework that many titles still benefit from today. For those who barely lived through the 90s and aren’t dreadfully scared of 30 and accepting the results of time, Quake 3 was hugely important for online gameplay as well as curved walls.

The sprawling maps of Quake 3 were revolutionary because, unlike most games from this period, they didn’t look like they’d been created by a series of rulers and cubes. Instead, Quake 3 had curves that added complexities to shooting, and all of a sudden, players would have to be more tactical.

Alongside the fantastic multiplayer for players to enjoy with friends, this game was a huge leap forward in terms of online matchmaking, and games like Call of Duty still benefit from the legacy of this game. While it may not be as good to play now, Quake 3 illustrates that great games take strides to give players something new, resulting in legendary status.

It’s just unfortunate that 1999 was really the peak for this franchise.

Half-Life 2

Players question where is Half-Life 3 regularly, and for good reason because Half-Life 2 was sensational. The game mixed shooting and puzzle elements seamlessly while creating an exciting world.

While graphics age, the gameplay in Half-Life 2 is still fantastic, and its mixture of elements lay the groundwork for many action-adventure games today. Half-Life 2 impressed players in 2004, and it has continued to do so because it’s a fun game with plenty of content.

The ability to build an arsenal as you play was praised by critics, and the fact that it was a visual improvement on its predecessor. On top of that, the intriguing narrative alongside expectation for a sequel that never came has managed to make this game a significant title in gaming.

Wolfenstein 2 New Colossus

Despite stealth elements, Wolfenstein 2 is truly an all-out assault against the Nazis with a crazy premise and twists that only increase the insanity. B.J Blazkovicz first appeared in 1992, and as many of you will have guessed, he killed a lot of Nazis.

The franchise was somewhat rebooted with publisher Bethesda, and Blaskovich returned to doing what he did best. While the first installment of the reboot was strong, it seems that Wolfenstein 2 knew colossus really turned up the volume in terms of sheer bravado and epic action scenes.

This title saw players traverse America, killing Nazis and having their heads cut off in short. This game exemplified how good a title can be when it commits to its premise and lets go of all pretense. Wolfenstein 2 is an essential thrill ride for fans of first-person shooters.

Counter-Strike – Global Offensive

If you have ever contemplated becoming a professional gamer, lifting numerous Esports trophies, and living the dream, then you’ll be familiar with counter-strike global offensive. The game is the essential online first person shooter, and it has a huge fan base that makes the game competitive and fun.

Even though this game did not change the Counter-Strike formula, it did improve on its core elements, and for many fans, that is more than enough. Classic Counter-Strike maps, features, and visually the game is pleasing. Yet the greatest pull of this game is its incredible Esports scene that showcases just what high-tension scenarios can come out of a relatively simple first-person shooter setup.

While it is a great game to play online, players should not expect to be crowned a champion anytime soon. The talent that is showcased in this game is staggering and untouchable for many of us, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. Right?

Bioshock

Aesthetically pleasing, narratively dark, and fantasy-based, Bioshock leveraged unconventional mechanics to elevate the genre. Bioshock began a series in the best way possible, and while sequels have been impressive, the original is still a landmark title that deserves praise.

The game introduced big daddies and little sisters, and the first-person shooter genre hasn’t been the same since. By incorporating a bigger narrative focus and morality, the game managed to set itself apart when it was released 13 years ago.

It also had sensational visuals and a world that was as engaging as it was dark, very dark. The result was a game that picked up a claim and kick-started a franchise of wonderment and action. The game’s story and mechanics have been conceptualized years before Bioshock went into development, and it shows.

The game was a fully fleshed story that offered interesting alternatives to conventional games in the genre. As a result, Bioshock quickly became adored by fans and critics alike.

Titanfall 2

Titanfall was going to be a franchise that lasted forever. At least that’s how it felt after the first game. The series appeared to have been abandoned, but weirdly, that’s not because the sequel was terrible; it is terrific.

While the story was basic and short, the gameplay of this game incorporated sci-fi and first-person shooting seamlessly. The title was undoubtedly a classic, and it also had fun online multiplayer. Unfortunately, it performed poorly, and this seemed to doom any more sequels.

Released in between Battlefield 1 and a game that borrowed the futuristic elements from the franchise itself, Call of Duty Infinite Warfare. It’s safe to say the title could not compete with these more established franchises. While it was a better title than Call of Duty Infinite Warfare and its weird quest to control the solar system, many didn’t give Titanfall 2 a chance.

The team behind the game Respawn Entertainment have now made Apex Legends, but in all honesty, it’s just not the same. Underappreciated on release, Titanfall 2 is definitely a classic.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare

A refined take on a classic Call of Duty Modern Warfare introduced new features such as Warzone alongside trusted mechanics, which has made this series one of the most successful ever. There is no way that a first-person shooter list could miss a Call of Duty game.

The series has been one of the biggest the world has ever seen, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare exemplifies this. The soft reboot was destined for success, but the fact that it utilizes the history of the games alongside new features have set this iteration apart.

Whether players want a traditional experience, an online fight, a battle royale setup, or a competitive edge with a Modern warfare 2 boost, they can have it in this game.

While players have had their issues with the game, there is no doubt that Call of Duty Modern Warfare is appealing to millions of people and delivering content that players love.

Doom Eternal

The doom franchise carved out the template for the first-person shooter genre so it can be enjoyed the way it is today. Released in 1993, its combination of sci-fi and gore made it an instant hit with gamers who hadn’t really ever seen such rich textures alongside the ability to play multiplayer.

So, why is the recent Dome Eternal on this list and not the original? Simple because if you were to pick up both titles right now, there would be a clear winner. Doom Eternal improved the pacing of its predecessors, introduced new enemies, and indeed took the franchise to a better place in terms of graphics.

The gameplay is still blisteringly fast and enough to make players sweat like they’re competing in a marathon, and most importantly, the game keeps the spirit of Doom alive for another generation.

Halo 3

As soon as Halo 3 starts up, the music lets players know that they are in for a truly epic experience. Ethereal choir music aside, this title was a game-changer. At the same time, the game did not necessarily introduce groundbreaking mechanics. It combined the best elements of multiple genres to create something truly unique.

In terms of story Halo 3 concludes an action-packed trilogy with even more adventure as you take down giant scarabs and shoot through the horde at a rapid pace. It’s also neatly finished the story of the master chief.

Although the character would return in sequels that seem to lack the same impact as the original trilogy yet online, this game took on a new life. The ability to create your own map, play with friends online and offline and design your own matches through a huge selection of customizable options was an incredible achievement.

In fact, not many games have managed to recreate this freedom and, as a result, feel restrictive in comparison. The online gameplay of Halo 3 is still a benchmark for quality 13 years later and one that is rarely met. Fortunately, the master chief collection allows players to revisit this title in its remastered glory.
