What is the EXT Port on a PS4 Controller?

Many people have asked me this question, What is that EXT port on a PS4 controller. I’ve been using PS4 since it came out, and honestly, I never paid any attention to it! The first time when this question came to me, I was like, oh, I don’t know.

So, this is when I started searching about the mysterious PS4 controller EXT port. In this article, I will share all the information that I collected and try to answer all of your questions about this PS4 EXT port.

The EXT port acts as a USB 2 connector, and I found different accessories that can be attached using this port.

DualShock 4 Charging Station

DualShock 4 Charging Station

The real purpose behind the EXT port on the DualShock 4 is to charge the controller using the charging station. Just like the USB port on the back, you can charge your controller by placing it on the charging station.

You can simply place your controllers on the charging dock, and it will start charging them. It has room for two separate controllers to be charged at the same time.

The charging station also works as a stand and looks good on the desk. The dock does not come with the PS4, and you’ll have to purchase separately.

Other than the official Sony charging station, many different brands are selling similar charging docks on Amazon.

Sony has also launched a DualSense charging station for PS5 controllers. The product is well in demand and limited to one per household.

Dualshock 4 Back Button Attachment

Another accessory you can attach using the EXT port is the back button attachment for the DualShock 4 controller. It adds two additional buttons to the rear of the controller with a little round-shaped LED screen on the back to control your presets.

You can attach this with your controller using the adjustable 3.5mm jack plus the EXT port (both at the same time). Once it’s on, it’s held in there pretty well.

A lot of you might don’t even know what the back button attachment is. This will give your DualShock 4 two completely re-mappable buttons on the back of the controller. This is something seen in a lot of higher-end controllers offered on the market. Most notably, Microsoft’s Elite Series controllers.

You might know about the scuff controllers that offer back buttons that go for well over a hundred to two hundred dollars. And this is Sony’s first official offering and retroactively cost-effective solution with a cost of around $30.

Wireless Mini Keyboard for PS4

Another cool accessory that you can attach using the EXT port is the mini wireless keyboard. This one is also attached by plugging in the 3.5mm jack and the EXT port together. There are many different brands available with slightly different designs. Some keyboards have EXT and 3.5mm jack, and some only have a 3.5mm jack.

You can easily attach it under their controller and start messaging. It isn’t easy and time-consuming to type with the controller buttons, and this keyboard makes typing very user-friendly. Most of the time, I don’t use a mic when gaming, and this keyboard comes in very handy for fast in-game messaging.

If you are like me, who watches a lot of YouTube on his PS4, this keyboard is a must-have. It makes typing easy and fast.

Most of these chat pads have two buttons underneath, one for on/off and one for Bluetooth connectivity. You will also find a charging port and a 3.5mm port to connect your headset.

EXT Port for Headsets and Headphones

I was able to find some headsets with EXT jack, but they were very rare, and I don’t think they are in stock anymore. There is already a 3.5mm port for headsets, so producing them with the EXT jack doesn’t seem like a good idea either.

Final Words

So, the EXT port is just a port like other ports used to connect accessories or charging the device. The sole purpose was to use it for the charging station, but a few more accessories were able to utilize the connectivity opportunity at the bottom.

Let’s see what more accessories we get in the future that uses this EXT port. I thought maybe Sony would remove it in the future. But as of now, they have included it in the PS5 controller.
